Monster

Note: To fully understand this poem, it's necessary to know the background behind it. This was written as an assignment for a creative writing class, where we were supposed to take a newspaper article and write a poem on it. My article was about parents who had been charged with the abuse of their foster child. The parents argued, pleaded, that they had loved the child, but that the boy had been found abusing their natural children.

I think I love a monster

There's a demon

With an angel's face

In the upstairs bedroom

He could have called me mother

I could have called him son

But he calls me witch

And slowly kill my children

I love him

But I wish I'd never met him

Why didn't they tell me

They were giving me

A devil

For a son
