Child On The Battlefield

By: ladyhawk

We stumbled along

Our feet dragging

our scrawny exhausted bodies.

A platoon of aged

young men

marching obediently

for their country.

Each step drew us

closer to our graves.

Signal to stop.

Gladly paused

in succession.

Enemy accross the plain.

Onto our stomachs

we lay.

Hearts speed to racing

stomachs turn

guns aimed ready.

SMALL BOY

RUNS ACROSS

THE BATTLEFIELD

I saw the innocence

in his eyes.

I leapt instinctively

to my feet.

I ran and dove

GUNS FIRED

for the boy

LOUDLY IN THE AIR

he fell

into my arms.

His breathless face

looked up at me

frowning.

Then I.....

The door to the

world slammed

SHUT.
