Ever Wondering

By: Fox

I stood gazing across the sea, the waves foamed at the end, a reenactment of the past pulsed through my mind. The horrible and the good had taken place. I was betrayed by other mortals, humans, like a black widow betraying her spouse. The ones I trusted in most, my own kind, betrayed me.

As the sun sank below the surface, darkness spread across my land. Yet, it was beginning a new day on the other side. How can that be, the darkness, so cold and vast, could not be taking place on the other side? It seemed as though the darkness consumed everything in its path devouring it and holding it until daybreak. And to think, that the others could not see the stars, so beautiful and mysterious even in the year 3000. The stars make you wonder, and make it easier to think.

I stood there for hours on that cliff, the beauty of the stars caught me in their hands and held me there, never moving. I heard the sound of the waves crashing on the sand, the shells and rocks that had been there for a thousands of years, colliding with each other. Some fortunate person could walk up and take it, and for a second be happy they are holding something that was theirs.

I watched the constellations, as our Earth turned round. I slept soundly afterwards under a tree, on the soft summer grass. I awoke when a deep, knowing voice echoed in my dreams.

"You slept out here all night again, Mikaru?" He asked. A light rain had begun, and the dew on the grass became non-existent as the drops pelted them away.

"Of course, Soren, I love it out here, I love to think." I replied. Soren's jet black hair blew in the soft, salty wind. He helped me up from the ground and we stared to the east. The sun had not yet come up, and we patiently awaited its arrival. His eyes were wide open staring into mine, I could see clearly as deep as his blue eyes were. As deep as the sea itself, I saw my own sad, green eyes in his. I brushed my white hair away from my face, and held my head upward, letting the drops of rain hit it and cleanse my soul, and the burdens on it.

I remembered the thieves entering my house, at that time. The gun shots, piercing the calm, the screams echoing in my ears, never to be gone. There was no time to run, no plan of escape. I was ready to die, the death of my family, which came so suddenly by betrayers of human kind. My hero came then, he did not show up on a white stallion, nor was he a prince from a far off distant place. He was my friend, the best friend I'll ever have.

Now, we stood there, gathering up the image in our minds. The sight held us, ever remembering that moment. The sun rose, and it was a new day, I could not see the stars, although others could. As the day got brighter Soren and I realized that life does go on. During the day we were fascinated by the lives we live, at night by the wonders and mysteries life will give us tomorrow, ever wondering
